Cold Gas in Massive Galaxies as a Critical Test of Black Hole Feedback Models

چکیده
Black hole feedback has been widely implemented as the key recipe to quench star formation in massive galaxies modern semi-analytic models and hydrodynamical simulations. As theoretical details surrounding accretion of black holes continue be refined, various have across simulations, with notable differences their outcomes. Yet, most these simulations successfully reproduced some observations, such stellar mass function rate density local Universe. We use recent observation on change neutral hydrogen gas (including both ${\rm H_2}$ HI}$) central disc a critical constraint several find that predictions IllustrisTNG agree observations much better than other tested this work. This favors IllustrisTNG's treatment active galactic nuclei - where kinetic winds are driven by at low rates more plausible amongst those we test. In turn, also indirectly supports idea galaxy population Universe was likely quenched AGN feedback.

Axisymmetric, 3-integral Models of Galaxies: a Massive Black Hole in Ngc 3379
We fit axisymmetric 3-integral dynamical models to NGC 3379 using the line-of-sight velocity distribution obtained from HST/FOS spectra of the galaxy center and ground-based long-slit spectroscopy along four position angles, with the light distribution constrained by WFPC2 and ground-based images. We have fitted models with inclinations from 29 (intrinsic galaxy type E5) to 90 (intrinsic E1) an...
متن کاملMassive black hole binary evolution in gas-rich mergers
We report on key studies on the dynamics of black holes (BHs) in gas-rich galaxy mergers that underscore the vital role played by gas dissipation in promoting BH inspiral down to the smallest scales ever probed with use of high-resolution numerical simulations. In major mergers, the BHs sink rapidly under the action of gas-dynamical friction while orbiting inside the massive nuclear disc result...
متن کاملMassive Black Hole Binary Evolution
Coalescence of binary supermassive black holes (SBHs) would constitute the strongest sources of gravitational waves to be observed by LISA. While the formation of binary SBHs during galaxy mergers is almost inevitable, coalescence requires that the separation between binary components first drop by a few orders of magnitude, due presumably to interactions of the binary with stars and gas in a g...
متن کاملBinary Dynamics near a Massive Black Hole
We analyze the dynamical evolution of binary stars that interact with a static background of single stars in the environment of a massive black hole (MBH). All stars are considered to be single mass, Newtonian point particles. We follow the evolution of the energy E and angular momentum J of the center of mass of the binaries with respect to the MBH, as well as their internal semi-major axis a,...
متن کاملViolent Relaxation Around a Massive Black Hole
I present galaxy models resulting from violent relaxation in the presence of a pre-existing black hole. The models are computed by maximizing the entropy of the stellar dynamical system. I show that their properties are very similar to those of adiabatic growth models for a suitable choice of parameters. This suggests that observations of nuclear light profiles and kinematics alone may not be s...
